Bespoken Bride: Meet Sarah

Happy Monday, friends! I'm excited to introduce you to another Bespoken Bride today! When Sarah first inquired about hiring Bespoken to plan and coordinate her wedding, I was super excited to meet her. I could tell she was sweet, and yet had spunk. We met at Larkin's and hit it off...I mean, she also wishes she were a mermaid, just like me ;)

Your love's name: Clay

How did you two meet? How long have you known each other? We met on Tinder, and we've been together for about two and a half years.

Where do guys like to go on your dates? Our first date was at Coffee Underground, so we like to revisit that when we're back in Greenville. We also love Willy Taco, Nose Dive, Borderlands and Tangled Web (comic book/gaming shops), movies at NGC Theater, and anywhere we can take our pup Charlie.

What is your favorite restaurant or type of food? The original Willy Taco in Spartanburg!

We go together like _______.: Mickey and Minnie

When did you know he was "the one"? Did he know before you knew? I knew on our fourth date, when he told me he had never seen Mulan but knew all the songs because he had listened to the Disney station on Pandora a lot. He then proceeded to sing "I'll Make a Man Out of You" perfectly, doing the characters' voices and everything. Who could resist that?!

How did he propose? Were you surprised? We are an egalitarian couple and decided to propose to each other. We picked a date in advance, bought engagement jewelry for each other, and planned ways to surprise each other. For Clay's half of the day, he recreated our first date and had Coffee Underground create a gluten free version of the dessert we had on our first date (I was diagnosed with a gluten intolerance about a year into our relationship and thought I'd never be able to have this again). For my half, we went to the Greenville Zoo and took a backstage tour where we were able to hand feed the red pandas (Clay's favorite zoo animal).

When and where are you two getting married? What made you decide to get married here? We're getting married at our church, Hub City Church in Spartanburg. We decided to get married here because we have a personal and spiritual connection to the space and because we were given much more control over our day than we could have had at a traditional venue.

What colors are you using for your wedding? Literally every color.

Describe your wedding in three words. Offbeat, personal, and FUN

How would you describe the style of your wedding? We're taking a lot of inspiration from the movie Up, so we'll have lots of bright colors and a general "vintage travel/adventure" theme.

What are your top 3 must-haves for your wedding? Clay, the dress, the cake.

What is your favorite wedding blog or magazine? A Practical Wedding

What have you loved most about planning your wedding? I'm big on spreadsheets and crafting, and I've had a ton of both over the last few months.

Are you guys going on a honeymoon? Where? Why did you choose this location? What are you going to do? We're going on a 7-night Disney cruise to the Western Caribbean with stops in Jamaica, Mexico, and Castaway Cay (Disney's private island).

What are you most excited about in your marriage? Hanging out with my favorite weirdo every day forever.

If you could give any future bride one piece of advice, what would you tell her? At the end of the day, it's about you and your partner. That's what everyone is showing up for, not for the linens or the specialty cocktails or the hand-made favors. Do something that reflects you as a couple and your guests will love it because they love the two of you. Don't drive yourself crazy on details nobody will notice or spend a crazy amount of money on something because it's trendy or expected.

How to Make Sure You Have Time Alone During Your Wedding

I meet so many brides who tell me that they keep hearing from their friends who've gotten married that they won't have much time to spend with their groom. That they won't have much time to take a step back, breathe, and just enjoy a moment together...relishing in the fact that they just got married.

A wedding is meant to celebrate the marriage of two people, and yet weddings can be all sorts of emotions. Intense...exciting...overwhelming...emotional. It can go by in a blur, so fast that you look back at the end of the night, and think, "Did I even really get to see my new husband/wife?"

So how do two people who just want to soak it all in for a moment find a way to sneak off?

Here are 5 ideas and ways for you to make sure you have time alone during your wedding:

  1. Head to a separate room (or rooftop like Ryan & Jenny did).
  2. Do a First Look.
  3. Sneak away in a private room to sign your marriage license after the ceremony.
  4. If your wedding is at two separate venues, book a car for two, and take a ride around town before heading to the Reception.
  5. Eat dinner at a sweetheart table.

Be intentional about setting some time aside to spend with your new husband, even if it's just for 5-10 minutes. This day is about you. Your guests will be fine. I just don't recommend being gone for more than 20-30 minutes :)

{Published} Moody Ocean-Inspired Wedding Ideas

If you know me at all, you know my love for the ocean is strong. So this past spring I designed a mood board for an ocean-inspired shoot, and then got some of Greenville's finest wedding vendors on board to make it come to life. The result was pure perfection. And then, to top it all off, the editors at Ruffled reached out to me to publish it! You can see the full, original post here. And some additional favorites of mine are below. I hope it gives you all the ocean vibes it gave me...

{Vendor Love} Matt Rouse Films

A few weeks ago I had the pleasure of meeting with Matt and Meredith Rouse of Matt Rouse Films. I was super excited to talk to them because I not only love meeting new friends and vendors, but I also am always looking for quality videographers for Bespoken brides and grooms. After talking with Matt and Meredith, I asked if I could feature them on the blog to share them with everyone else... I personally love his Chipotle tip ;) And be sure to scroll all the way down for a wedding film feature! :)

What led you to the wedding industry? We shot our first wedding just 2 weeks before my graduation from college in 2012! My passion for shooting weddings has grown as I've grown as a filmmaker these past 5 years. I love stories and telling stories that matter. Wedding filmmaking gives me the opportunity to interact with and tell stories about amazing, joyful, loving and committed couples! I'm so excited to be able to create film experiences to help them remember the commitment they are making. I truly believe that with film, you not only remember your wedding, you experience it.

What is the best piece of advice you can give couples for planning their wedding? I always recommend that our couples have the best man, maid of honor, and father of the bride give toasts at the reception. There is something so special and beautiful about people telling stories about and loving on the bride and groom by giving speeches. Toasts turn into some of the most treasured moments in any wedding film.

Share your most memorable wedding moment. This was a lighthearted moment that I really enjoyed! We filmed a wedding in March at a Church that had just completed a bunch of renovations. They had moved the pipe organ from one end of the church to the other. Either the organ hadn't been properly tuned, or the whole system was still settling after the move. Right after the bridal processional, it started making these sounds that sounded like a beached whale groaning. Everyone in the crowd had a good laugh which was a funny and memorable moment before a beautiful ceremony!

Where do you find your inspiration? I'm so inspired by natural light and love the way wedding filmmakers can transform a scene from good to great just by moving the subject towards a window. I'm also really inspired by the beautiful words that people have to say to the bride and groom during toasts! :)

What do you love most about what you do? I love the opportunity to create heirlooms for our couples! I firmly believe that wedding films can help us remember our promises and experience how we felt as we made them on our wedding day!

What is your favorite wedding cake flavor? It's gotta be chocolate cake with vanilla icing!! It tastes divine! My wife Meredith and I totally forgot to eat cake on our wedding day! I so wish we could go back and have a slice ;)

What is your favorite way to spend a day off? My wife and I love spending time outside, playing disc golf, watching movies or heading out to dinner with friends. You can often find us at Chipotle for weekend lunches. If I could, I would probably eat a chicken burrito bowl almost every day for lunch. They are that good! Quick tip: Instead of using a fork to eat a burrito bowl, use chips. You'll thank me later!

What is your biggest guilty pleasure? I don't know if it's a guilty pleasure, but I love chocolate milk and drink it most days of the week! Nesquik is my jam :)

What would we be surprised to know about you? In college, I got to spend one summer living in an apartment on the same block as the Empire State Building in NYC! It was an amazing experience!

Be sure to say hi, and follow Matt on Instagram and Facebook!

Real Wedding: Erin & Matt

Erin and Matt were married on New Year's Eve at The Angus Barn Pavilion in Raleigh ,NC, and their wedding was the perfect way to round out 2016. NYE is one of my favorite holidays because it's typically spent with loved ones celebrating. So when you add in a wedding celebration, good food, good music, good drinks, and a lot of elegance and sparkly things, you know you're going to ring in the new year well. After months of planning and designing, everything came together beautifully. The night was magical, and Brian Mullins helped capture it all.

Erin gave all of her bridesmaids Plum Pretty Sugar robes, while Matt gifted each of his groomsmen with custom cufflinks to fit each gentleman's personality and hobbies.

No New Year's Eve detail was overlooked...as guests entered for the ceremony, they were offered glasses of champagne to enjoy while they were waiting. For the ceremony itself, there was a lot of candlelight, beautiful florals, and many twinkle lights.

Erin & Matt's reception was one big party with beautiful linens on all of the tables with hand-lettered place cards, a kid's table with arts & crafts, a photo booth for capturing memories, the cutest cake detail ever (you're going to LOVE this), a giant dance floor with an amazing DJ, and plenty of people having a good time.

Erin and Matt, I am so happy for the two of you! I hope you are enjoying life as newlyweds! xoxo-Shannon
